MCA Presents Visiting Art Historian A. Victor Coonin

James R. Ruffin Professor of Art History at Rhodes College to present on the Contemporary Relevance of Michelangelo’s David
WHAT: Visiting Art Historian A. Victor Coonin will present a free art history lecture for the public and MCA community titled “The Contemporary Relevance of Michelangelo’s David.” The lecture will highlight themes of gender and sexuality, beauty and body image, and censorship and violence in Michelangelo’s famous statue. Though “David” was created over 500 years ago, Coonin will examine how the work continues to resonate in popular culture, citing modern artists such as Banksy and Warhol, who have riffed on the statue to highlight artistic and cultural concerns.
  • Coonin is the author of the book From Marble to Flesh: The Biography of Michelangelo’s David (2014, The Florentine Press)
  • Coonin’s work and research has received support from the prestigious Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.

Each year, prominent artists and art scholars from around the nation are invited to present and discuss their artwork and research to the local community.
