MCA Welcomes New Faculty to Undergraduate & Graduate Programs





O. Gustavo Plascencia Joins as Director of MFA Programs, Dr. Katherine Gubbels as Assistant Professor

Memphis College of Art (MCA) is pleased to announce two additions to the full-time faculty. Earlier this month the college welcomed O. Gustavo Plascencia as the new Director of MFA Programs, as well as Dr. Katherine Gubbels as Assistant Professor and Head of Writing Programs in the Liberal Arts department. The college began the 2016-2017 academic year on Monday, Aug. 22.
Plascencia comes to MCA with several years of experience in teaching and working with both undergraduate and graduate art programs at institutions around the country including Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado, Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, and Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Plascencia earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fine Art and Photography from the University of Texas–Arlington in 2002, and his Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography and Media Arts from the University of Colorado–Boulder in 2006. He has participated in numerous residency programs and exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally, in countries Colombia, Mexico, Bulgaria and Italy. In his new role, Plascencia will work with department heads to oversee recruitment and administration for MCA’s five MFA programs: Studio Art, Photography, Illustration, Painting and Drawing, and Metals.  
Gubbels also comes to MCA from Adams State University and brings a wealth of experience in teaching English and writing at various colleges, including Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska and the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Gubbels earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2002, and her Master of Arts degree and Ph.D. in English from the University of Iowa in 2007 and 2010, respectively. Gubbels research focuses on the study of sexuality in Medieval literature, a topic on which she has presented numerous papers and lectures, as well as authored two forthcoming publications.
Gubbels and Plascencia will add to the roster of internationally recognized faculty at Memphis College of Art. More information about the college’s academic programs and faculty can be found at mca.edu.
