Foundry Invitational and River Exhibition (F.I.R.E.)

The Metal Museum is pleased to announce the second annual Foundry Invitational and River Exhibition (F.I.R.E.) including foundry workshops, a slide lecture, an opportunity to participate in an iron pour and a Family Fun Day from 10:30am ­-2pm on Saturday, May 14 with food trucks and hands­on activities for all ages.

This year’s guest artist for F.I.R.E. is Glenn Zweygardt, professor emeritus at Alfred University, Alfred, NY. Zweygardt will teach a pre­conference workshop on May 11-13, on small­-scale ceramic shell casting and participants will learn how to use new methods to prepare their own mold for casting during the conference.

In addition to Zweygardt’s workshop the Museum staff will host a shorter pre­-conference workshop on on green sand casting using oil bonded sand on Friday, May 13 in preparation for casting on Saturday, May 14.

The conference includes a slide lecture from our visiting artist on the evening of Friday, May 13, aluminum and bronze castings between 10am and 12pm on May 14 and an iron pour during the afternoon of Saturday, May 14. The Museum will fire up its cupolette with a guest furnace provided by Page Burch of Kennesaw, Georgia. Participants may cast their own molds.

Conference registration is now open online at This conference is open to artists of all skill levels and participants will get instruction from the Lawler Foundry staff and volunteers, as well as have access to many pattern and flask materials. Registration for the conference is $75 and includes lunch on Friday and dinner on Friday and Saturday.

Ceramic Shell Workshop
PROJECT: Learn how to set up a small­-scale ceramic shell using a shell spen and iron casting PREREQUISITE: Foundry Fundamentals Class or equivalent

PROJECT: Learn the basic molding techniques of oil bonded green sand and make an aluminum cast
PREREQUISITE: Must be registered for the F.I.R.E. conference

F.I.R.E. Casting Conference
PROJECT: Includes access to foundry for bronze and aluminum casting, a slide lecture with the visiting artist and an iron pour on Saturday, May 14. Conference registration also includes lunch and dinner on Friday and dinner on Saturday
