January/February Classes - 2016  

Mondays
Still Life Painting in Acrylics with Melissa Dunn
Monday, January 11 - Feb 15th9am-12pm
$225 + $50 Materials Fee | 6 classes | Beginner and Up  
Proportion, rhythm, unity, and balance all come together to make a strong still life composition.  Students will work with a variety of set ups, from the very minimal and monochromatic to busy interwoven colorful piles. Each week will build on the previous week in difficulty and complexity, making this course ideal for beginning students who want learn about acrylic techniques in an accumulative way.  For more experienced artists, this is a great opportunity to clock the hours necessary to hone your painting skills by mapping out new objects each week.



Watercolor Lessons from The Masters with Nancy Cheairs
Monday, January 11th - February 15th1-4pm
$225 + $60 Materials Fee | 6 Classes | Beginner and Up  
Students have been copying the masters for centuries.   In this class, we  will make copies from watercolorists  in order to learn wet on wet, glazing and the little white line technique. Walter Anderson, Charles Burchfield, Georgia O’Keeffe, Emile Nolde, Charles Demuth, Marlene Dumas,  Marcel Dzama, Paul Klee and others will be our guides in this fun and immersive class.   Add some new moves to your watercolor by learning from the masters.

Expand your Watercolor Practice with Nancy Cheairs
Tuesday, January 12th - February 16th9am-12pm
$225 + $60 Materials Fee | 6 Classes | Intermediate  
A simplified palette, a couple of brushes and small sheets of high quality watercolor paper will be our portal into the world of gestural, expressive painting.  Working from brief pencil, ink  and watercolor sketches, the students will learn how to loosen up as they explore different watercolor techniques.
Students will experiment with different papers, learn about basic composition, color mixing and paint properties but the primary focus of this class is about capturing mood through joyful, experimental watercolor painting.  Keep it small and watch your painting expand!

Exploring Materials & Methods of Oil Painting with Elizabeth Alley
Tuesday,  January 12th - 26th6-9pm
$125 +  $40 Materials Fee | 3 Classes | Beginner and Up
We will explore the non-painting parts of the painting process from setting up to cleaning up. Students will learn about materials and supplies for their home studio, paper and canvas preparation, and color mixing.  

Acrylic Painting: Color and Form with Laurel Sucsy
Tuesday, February 2nd - 16th6-9pm
$125 + $40 Materials Fee | 3 Classes | Beginner and Up
In this class students will explore the various ways that color functions in painting.  We will practice methods for mixing color as well as examining works of art in which color plays a major role. Paintings in this course can take the form of realist or abstract works depending on the student’s interests.

Oil Painting 101 with Sunny Montgomery
Wednesday, Jan 13th - Feb 17th12:30-3:30pm
$225 + $50 Materials Fee | 6 Classes | Beginner and Up
New students will learn the basics of oil painting as more experienced painters continue to develop and refine their skills. Students will work on oil painting techniques while using different source materials, such as photos, art history, and direct observation.  Brushes, mediums, and materials will be discussed throughout this six-session exploration of a classic medium.

Refining and Expanding your Practice with Hamlett Dobbins
Thursday, January 14th - February 18th9am-12pm
$225 - No Materials Fee | 6 classes | Intermediate - Advanced
This series of classes will be a continuation of the fall session's successful Critique series.  Our goal is to develop and improve the studio practice of Flicker Street Studio's students who often work beyond the classroom.  There will be lectures and discussions where students can explore the working methods of a variety of local, regional, and internationally known artists.  Each week Hamlett Dobbins and the students will provide feedback on work done outside of class.

Drawing and Painting the Figure with Hamlett Dobbins
Thursday, January 14th - February 18th6-9pm
$225 + $60 Materials Fee | 6 classes |  Beginner and Up
Artists have always been inspired by the human figure. In this class Hamlett Dobbins will employ a variety of traditional techniques and experimental approaches to explore this timeless subject.  Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of drawing and painting materials to rise to the challenge of rendering the figure from observation.  This class will work as an introduction to drawing and will also provide inspiration for advanced students.

Exploring Color and Design with Paul Klee with Kerrie Rogers
Monday, January 11th - February 15th, 4-5:30pm
$150 - all materials included | 6 classes | Ages 7 and up.
Learning how to mix and create a variety of colors from three primary colors will provide young artists  with an essential foundation for artistic expression. The students will  create color wheels and learn about  primary, secondary, complementary and analogous colors.   The students will then build on their color mixing skills and create work inspired by Klee's Highways and Byways and Cityscapes.  Paul Klee and The Bauhaus Group will be the inspiration for this fun and imaginative class.

Painterly Painting with Melissa Dunn
Monday, March 14 - April 18 | 9am-12pm
$225 + $50 Materials Fee | 6 classes | Beginner and Up  
Do you enjoy painting but don’t know what to paint?  Source material is everywhere, but knowing how to uncover it and turn a spark of an idea into meaningful content can seem like a mystery.  By merging conceptual experimentation with painting techniques like washes, layering, brushstroke variation, and color mixing, students will develop both the methods necessary to discover ideas as well as the skills necessary to execute them.  For students who have taken this course before, please join us again!  New and compelling exercises will challenge all levels of experience.

Drawing and Painting the Figure with Nancy Cheairs
Tuesday, March 15th - April 19th,  9am-12pm
$225 + $60 Materials Fee | 6 classes | Beginner and Up
This class will use the figure as a springboard to explore expressive drawing and painting.   The essence of the class is about finding different ways to interpret the figure through a variety of drawing materials and water based media.   The class will work from a live model. Depending on the exercise, the model will be nude or clothed.


Develop your Studio Practice with Elizabeth Alley
Tuesday, March 15th - April 5th6-9pm
$150 + $25 Materials Fee | 4 classes | Beginner and Up
This class will provide help with getting started or getting unstuck when developing your own work. Bring in work in progress, work that is stuck, or a new idea that you are having trouble starting and work on it over the course of four weeks. Elizabeth Alley will be your “Studio Personal Trainer” and help you move your work forward.
Bring in your own materials, and some materials will be provided.

Still Life to Abstraction with Hamlett Dobbins
Thursday, March 24th - April 21st9am-12pm
$200 + $50 Materials Fee | 5 classes | Beginner and Up
This class will provide the student with a new understanding of abstraction and how it may fit into their own paintings.  The instructor will provide a variety of approaches and techniques for discovering abstraction and pattern.  The class will include approaches suitable for the beginner yet challenging enough for more advanced painters.

Abstraction and the Figure with Hamlett Dobbins
Thursday, March 24th - April 21st, 6-9pm
$200 + $60 Materials Fee | 5 classes | Beginner and Up
This class will be a perfect opportunity for students who are interested in the figure and curious about the often misunderstood world of abstraction.  We will use drawing and painting materials to investigate a number of new and exciting approaches to abstraction using the figure as a starting point.  While this class will build upon lessons learned in the first session's "Drawing and Painting the Figure," it is not necessary to have prior experience.
