Kong Wee Pang Art Opening
Friday, May 1
820 South Cooper

Tart Memphis, at 820 S. Cooper St., is delighted to host Kong Wee Pang in a week-long show, the last curated by former owner Heather Pike.

Kong Wee Pang is a Designer/Artist from Malaysia. She graduated from Singapore Nanyang Academy of Fine Art and moved to the United States in 2001. She received a degree in Fine Art and Design and an MFA from the Memphis College of Art. She currently works as Senior Art Director at the mid-south's largest ad agency, Archer>Malmo.

Pang is also half of Taropop, a small husband/wife studio focusing on whimsical illustrations, screenprints, jewelry and other handmade creations.

Recently she has shown her work in New York Time Square, Spain, Italy, Berlin, Atlanta, Memphis and California.

Kong Wee Pang is excitedly making art specifically for Tart's energy and space. "I pay attention to the whole experience of the art, not just what is on the walls", says Pang. She has been preparing unusual materials: wood, vinyl and industrial grade felt, for her installation at Tart, which has a policy of letting artists carry their artistic narrative onto the walls. This invitation means not all of the art on view winds up being for sale. Rather, what Tart offers is a temporary, immersive experience directed by each artist. Pieces admired and purchased by collectors ultimately become touchstones for that ephemeral experience.

In the items she is making for this show, Pang heavily references her dream of being a product designer, with pieces intended to be as utilitarian as they are beautiful.
