Brittany Wilder Exhibition at Playhouse on the Square
Memphis College of Art announces the opening of Brittany Wilder’s exhibition, Welcome to the Dollhouse, at Playhouse on the Square, 66 S. Cooper St. The exhibition will be on view .
Wilder was born and raised in Benton, Ark. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2005 and, in 2010, her Master of Fine Arts degree from Memphis College of Art. She currently lives in Arkansas, where she has worked as an adjunct professor at her alma mater, teaching two-dimensional design, and is now a full-time Foundations instructor at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia.
In her work, Wilder explores her obsession with the physical act of sex, imagining sexual elements in everything she sees and experiences. Wilder approaches this subject with humor and through assemblage of appropriated images and text, literary and imagined, attempting to find a way to have her distrust of the aspects of intercourse, both physical and emotional, become comfortable and familiar.
In Welcome to the Dollhouse, Wilder finds new ways to explore and represent her obsession. “Sexual relationships and non-physical ones, past and present, play a big part in this series,” said Wilder. “The images have become simplified and abstract. Highly saturated color schemes are used to draw in the viewer, while vulgar shapes and symbols start the conversation.”
Playhouse's MCA Gallery is open Monday to from , from and on show nights.
