Join us for a weekend of exciting activities on the banks of the Mississippi River. Internationally recognized demonstrator and tool-maker, Brent Bailey will be on-hand for a slide lecture, blacksmithing demonstrations and a limited enrollment speciality workshop focusing on hand tools making items such as chisels, punches, drifts and more!

In addition to the chance to learn from a Master Blacksmith, Forging on the River provides metalsmiths and enthusiasts the opportunity to network with others who share their passion, exchange ideas and work collaboratively on projects while enjoying the Metal Museum exhibitions and grounds.

Other activities include: a series of four, not-to-be-missed, presentations Sunday, an open U-Forge area to practice and exchange skills, fun and entertaining contests, the creation of a “Friendship Chain” with conference attendees working together to create links, and a live and silent auction.

One integral part of the event is the auction Saturday night, April 6th. The auction features examples of some of the best fine metalwork in the country. We're excited to present such fine examples to a large audience that includes conference attendees as well as individuals and collectors from the Memphis area. The auction proceeds benefit Metal Museum programming, including Forging on the River. A ticketed dinner accompanies the auction (price is included in conference registration fees). Club Windward will provide Saturday's Game Dinner with quail over grits, honey soy salmon, potato souflle, sister rolls, and "too much chocolate cake" will be a part of . Click here for dinner tickets and to see auction items.

Time Pools: Accessing the Aquifer The League of Imaginary Scientists in collaboration with The University of Memphis

April 6 through May 24, 2013 Opening reception Friday, April 5 from 5 to 7:30
120,000 years ago, during an age of Saber-Tooth Tigers and Wooly Mammoths, rain poured down on Memphis and soaked into the soil. The resulting accumulation of water is the aquifer: a watery time capsule, in which rain from different ages is stored until the water flows to Memphis homes. Time Pools: Accessing the Aquifer provides an apparatus for examining the aquifer's liquid history. Along with The League of Imaginary Scientists, University of Memphis students brainstormed a cross-disciplinary dive into the Aquifer, resulting in an exhibition spurred on by the Ground Water Institute, that literally dives into the Memphis water table, one decade at a time. Cloud computing, a method for sharing data across a network, is parallel to the strata of Memphis' shared water supply, since Memphis dwellers access water from throughout the ages. Time Pools: Accessing the Aquifer reveals a time pool where data about and from the Aquifer's water from different years becomes visible. Peering into the time pool — its layers spanning the aquifer and the ages — one may question: "How deep is now, and how far is 10,000 years? Where was my water 50 years ago, and where is it going in the next decade?"

M. Fosters Claustrophobia Shleter

Claustrophobia Shelter is aimed to impart senses of security and claustrophobia simultaneously. Much like an umbrella protects from the rain but restricts full access to the world, the installation is protective and obtrusive. This installation aims to jar notions of spatial relation, shelter, and security.
